Re: Potentilla Abbotswood

Hi, Don: an idea: Although the little work horse H. Stella D'Oro has been over-used it can be combined with less-often used perennials to add interest. I found Liriope muscari variegata worked beautifully with it and does not spread like L. spicata and is drought-resistant. I did not have good luck with the named variegated Liriope muscari (Silver or Sun something). Also, if you decide to ditch the idea of the Stella D'Oro, a yellow shrub I've found very pretty, useful and satisfying is Hypericum and it's also quite drought resistant when established. Its arching habit is nice in the winter, as well.

Yes, thanks Joanie.  Itâs just that I would like to plant some other color then just the yellow, as this area is already surrounded by Hemerocallis Stella DâOro, which although I feel is grossly overused, I understand why, from a profession landscapers point if view.  This is a job that I have taken on as a favor to a former associate, but I would like to use some shrubs/perennials a bit different from the plants that everyone else seems to use.

Hi, Don:

My experience with P. Abbotswood over 6 years is: not much gaping of foliage, does not appear to be overly twiggy, flowers lightly and nicely all summer, cleanly drops the long-lasting blossoms, maintains a good green on the foliage, drought resistant, 3h'x3w', leafs out in May, keeps on going until the first frost. It's a useful little-leaved shrub. Hope this helps.

Iâm considering planting  Potentilla in a 3ft by 20 ft oval garden at the entrance to a condo complex.   Because of the relative nearness to the roadway, Iâm sure there will be  some exposure to winter salt.

The common yellow variety seems to have  been around for years, is common in the commercial trade and seems to perform  relatively well.  I was wondering if any of the varieties of other  colors, such as those Iâve listed below would perform as well.

If  anyone has any specific experience with any of these varieties, pro or con,  Iâd, appreciate hearing from you

ABBOTTSWOOD  (WHITE),
FROSTY (WHITE),
GOLD DROP (GOLD),
GOLDFINGER  (GOLD),
MANGO TANGO (RED & YELLOW),
MCKAYâS (WHITE),
PINK BEAUTY  (PINK),
RED ACE (SCARLET-YELLOW)

Thanks for any guidance you can  give.
