What is the thinking when a tree has a branch that decides to come up
and pretend to be another leader?
A magnolia campbellii (vertical habit) did this and a friend
encouraged me to leave it; the crotch is a right angle. Now it has
overtaken the first leader and I'm not sure I like the look.
The same happened to a fringe tree (Chionanthus virginicus) which is
growing in a squirrely and tortured habit. The second leader is
coming up strongly whereas the original one has gone horizontal and
shows no sign of sprouting upwards.
I pruned off a narrow crotched double leader on Stewartia monodelpha
and Nyssa sylvatica, having lost a 50' cedar which was ripped apart
in a big storm a few years back. (Never realized it had 2 leaders)
Now there is an empty area on that side....
Any opinions?
