Oooh, I'm jealous. :)
Pinus bungeana (lacebark pine) is a tree with beautifully patterned
bark. It's pretty subtle from a distance unless you limb the tree
up and plant it against a dark background, but from 10-15' it's
quite remarkable.
The colors vary from tree to tree, with some containing a mix of
rust-browns, greens, and greys, shades of gray and white, or some
combination thereof.
As trees become (significantly) older, they lose their mottling,
eventually bleaching to a nearly pure white. The bark also tends to
become more ridged and furrowed.
Regarding growth rate, it's pretty darn slow. How big is your tree
now? I've seen trees with a 2 1/2" caliper exhibiting some nice
exfoliation, so they must start pretty young.
