Well, Chris, from someone not too far from you and perhaps with similar soil
conditions, and who has killed this plant (twice, I think), I believe at
least one of the important things is that it is supposed to like sandy, very
acid soils.  So if you¹re going to do the raised bed thing, start with the
elemental sulfur and other acidifiers this fall (assuming you¹re planting in
the spring).  I¹m still trying to grow Enkanianthus and Gordonlinia.
They¹re still in pots and will probably stay that way, at least while I try
to get them through the coming winter.
 
It will be good if you can hear from some SUCCESSFUL growers of this neat
plant.
