I'm almost convinced that potted woody plants should only be planted in the fall when dormant in order to bare-root them and properly spread their roots. Since I began collecting 7 years ago many of my trees and shrubs have burgeoned above the soil surface with knots of roots which weren't visible when I planted them. Eventually I guess they'll choke themselves to death. Others don't anchor themselves on all sides and just flop. Is this correctible eventually or should I just start over? Some growers offer their plants in the 2" square by 8" deep pots which does allow deeper roots but probably crimps them at the top if left too long before planting or potting up. What do you think??
