I bought a dwarf holly 2 years ago that I would like to
recommend. Everyone who sees my plant comments
on it and wants one.
Unfortunately I don't have a good name or a direct source. The
label I have says Ilex hybrid "Mondo". It also says "Little
Rascal Holly". It was distributed by Monrovia Nurseries.
I got mine from a local nursery. They only had 2 and haven't carried
it since. I suspect that you could persuade a local nursery that
orders from Monrovia to get it.
Anyway it is very compact, and looks like it will stay below 1.5-2'
for many years. Leaves are blue/green, greener than the blue
hollies and leaves are about 1/3 the size, somewhat crinkled,
providing good texture. And the best thing it is is very hardy. The
label says Z4. I can't attest to that, but I have it in an exposed site
(Z5) and it hasn't burned in the slightest. Unfortunately It is a male, so
no berries, but it is a great foliage plant.
I have mine in my rock garden. I suspect it would make a dynamite
small EG hedge.
