There are several systems to avoid this problem when propagating woody
cuttings or microcuttings. They all have in common to use rather small diameter
or square but long containers, which have vertical streaks built in to lead
the roots downwards instead of letting them grow in circles. Just as easy.
I know the "roottrainers" used by the Scotland Forestry Authority, there is
a Hungarian make, there is the "Hilleshoeg" container from Sweden, there are
probably many more...
