Chris-
I've been growing a Pterostyrax hispida here in Milwaukee (5a) for the past
several years with no problem (other than my having moved it because it was
being inundated by a wild grape). I grow it in average clay soil with a
3/4 sun exposure. It does have some protection from north and west winds,
but has survived -20F. I was told when I first purchased it, that I might
experience problems with the growth properly hardening off in fall. I
can't say that I've noticed that it is any problem for me. If I were you,
I'd go for it!
