Gooseberries

Help please! I have 3 gooseberry bushes -- they were here when I got
here -- which get completely overtaken by sword ferns, salmon berry bushes
and long tough grasses no matter how hard I try. And I've tried vigorous
weeding and mulching with woodchips, leaves and straw.

This is year six and I've come to the end of my patience and am going to dig
them up. If I could liberate the gooseberry patch and get it under control,
so much could happen in that space that would be much more rewarding. I'm
being defensive. I don't like giving up on stuff. But I've just had it!

My question is -- is there any point trying to wash the root and get rid of
all the nasties and put them in a fresh bed. I'm in southwest BC. No frost
yet. We could get frost any day now. We could go all winter without a good
freeze. We could have two months of well below zero weather. It's
unpredictable! :-)

I'll keep trying with the blueberries & the raspberries ... but those
gooseberries! I'm sorry but they're gonna come out of there!

Any words of advice! ?

Thanks much. Feels better just to write it down. Boy am I frustrated.

Donna.
USDA Zone 6-8.
