If you really want that space for gooseberries and nothing else, why not
mow down everything but the gooseberries, wrap the gooseberries in
plastic or burlap, and then spray all the stubble with straight Roundup. 
Do it the next time some warm weather and no rain is predicted.
Works even better if you can buy the Roundup concentrate.  Bill Lee can
suggest a similar product, whose name I can not remember, that works even
faster.  
I had a similar problem with bush honeysuckle some years ago and it
worked like a charm.
