Japanese maple

Last year I wrapped my Japanese maple in burlap and it was decimated by
squirrels. It survived, flourished and has just dropped its leaves. Any
advice on if I absolutely need to wrap it? I have a suspicion that the
rodents went after the burlap rather than the maple branches. I am in
Montreal, it'll go down to -35 celcius at least a couple of times but it
usually pretty much stays below zero once winter is here.
