Ann,
I too live near Montreal. We have a Japanese Maple ('bloodgood') which
we wrap up each year in "Arbotex" (the white fabric used to give winter
protection from wind). We have never had a problem with squirrels or
other rodents (and believe you me, we have TONS of 'em around our
house!). We have never tried not protecting the tree (this will be it's
fourth winter), as I believe that it is marginally hardy here and we'd just
hate to take a chance on losing it. It's very tempting, though, to try
leaving it without protection.....as the tree has grown to close to seven
feet high... not too fun to cover up, let me tell you!!
