Re: YELLOW JACKETS

They will all die soon, except for the queen which will find a sheltered
spot to over-winter. At my place, this is often among the pieces of
firewood I have stacked outside. I give them a bang before I bring them
into the house, otherwise a sleepy queen starts buzzing around inside. In
the spring she will start a new nest. I have never had wasps re-use an old
nest, so it is always a challenge finding where the new ones are each
year. I don't do any major clearing in the garden once summer is here, in
case I disturb a nest. My father is not so cautious and often gets stung
while scything. This year there has been a crash in the wasp population
here. No nests in my yard, and I only occasionally see a single wasp
investigating the rotten plums in the compost.
