Pam, I don't blame you for being leery of those stingers! They are
especially aggressive this time of year. Bill's advice is good - putting
the jar over the hole. But for insurance, our extension agent says to pour
a little oil down the hole (used motor oil, cooking oil, whatever) and put a
rock over the hole. The oil will coat their wings and make it impossible to
fly. The rock will keep them in there until the oil has done its job. That
would eliminate the chance of the queen building another next somewhere in
your yard next year.

Subject: YELLOW JACKETS
In June while weeding around my rose and hydrangea bushes I discovered a
yellow jacket nest in the ground. I don't know if it explains why the
rose bush directly over the entrance and the dahlias planted near it
died, but after one sting I have not gone near it since June. It must be
quite a large hive because it is almost one per second when I count the
bees entering and leaving.
Do I just forget about this area of the garden and let them use that
corner as their own? Or should I try to discourage them and is winter
the time to do that?
