Undeniably lindera benzoin, spicebush, a terrific shrub for shade in
this part of the northeast/midatlantic. Very common in shady low areas
with some moisture. The berries are popular with the birds, the foliage
does get a fair yellow if it gets enough sun, and butterfly and moth
enthusiasts can sometimes find some interesting caterpillars on them.
The small almost inconspicuous flowers are precocious and faintly
fragrant sometimes in the early spring. The crushed leaves are
indicative of the common name.
