Re: Shrub ID needed

Thank you one and all!

It is Lindera benzoin, spicebush! With all of your help, did some
searching and found several pages of info. on the web with good pix
that tally with my scans right down to the flower buds - which I had
not scanned, but hoofed right out to find and compare.

What a load off my mind! I have hundreds, if not thousands of these
- seems to be the dominant understory species in my woods and I have
not had a clue for years. I find the crushed stems and leaves more
sweet in scent than spicy, but each nose is different. Maybe they
are why the woodthrushes return each year, to my delight.

Bill, sounds like you have it, too and not a holly:-)

Ruth, there are certain similarities with Oemleria cerasiformis, but
based on the pix on this site

http://www.orst.edu/dept/ldplants/2plants.htm#oece

that's not it, Oemleria has more prominent flowers and longer stems
on the fruit, which, if these pix are typical, comes in larger
clusters...but thanks anyway as I now know what an Oemleria looks
like:-)

I *knew* you guys would know..thanks again!
