Codling moth

Does anyone have experience with controlling codling moth? It leaves
my Asian pears (Pyrus pyrifolia) looking like this: (and this is one
of the better ones!)

The cosmetic damage I could live with, but their feeding (or
whatever) causes the stone cells at the damage site to enlarge,
resulting in a fruit that tastes as though it has sand grains
embedded in it.

I don't want to have to spray if I can avoid it. Are the pheromone
traps any good?
