Hi Diana,
I agree with most of the other list members. Juniperus scopulorum
'Skyrocket', or Skyrocket Rocky Mountain juniper, is a typically a
narrowly columnar form with vertically ascending branches.
Cutting the central leader would distort the habit from its intended
form. Once they reach their mature height of around 15' they won't
look so gangly. :)
