Dirca palustris?

I'm very interested in adding Dirca palustris (leatherwood) to my
heavily shaded backyard for its early April blooms and good fall color.
Aside from making sure that the soil is amended with organic matter and
keeping enough water on-hand, are there any tricks necessary to grow
this species?

I know that it likes water, but how close can it be?  What about
partially submerged roots alongside a small pond?
