I think you've got it!!
At a glance they look like a Schefflera but they are layered very close 
together.  The pictures I could find show the leaves well enuf that I am sure 
that is what it is esp. since its hardy in my area.  And needing acidic soil 
confirms my suspicions that it was lacking in something important.  

It is also planted in clay soil that I doubt I amended when I planted it.
Do you think I can lift it this fall, remove as much dirt as possible and 
replant it in amended soil or should I wait until spring ??  OR, if I lift 
it, maybe I should try not to disturb the roots?  I think one of the 
references said something about not liking to be moved.

Thank you all for help in identifying my poor shrub.
Maybe now I can rescue it and give it a better life.
Oh, and have any of you had any experience with it that you would like to 
share??
