Re: Need help with maple ID

<< Can any of you acerophiles (maple lovers) help me to ID this maple? The
seeds were collected in Washington State, altho not from a natural area.

You can view the photo at: http://www.execpc.com/~llmen/acer.jpg

Although it doesn't show well on the photo, the leaf petioles are quite red
 in color

Don,
It looks like Acer ginnala, Amur Maple, to me, but one can not make a
positive identification from a photo of leaves as there is a lot of seedling
variation in Maples.
Tatarian Maple, A. tataricum, has similar leaves, but the petioles are usually
green.

Acer rubrum (Red Maple) also has red petioles, but I would not expect to see
an elongated central lobe like those in your photo. There are other
differences, but the simplest way to seperate them would be the seeds. A.
ginnala normally has lots and lots of seeds, and holds them into winter. A.
rubrum drops its seeds in the spring. If it has samaras on it now, especially
if there are lots of them, I would say A. ginnala is a good guess.

Info about the stems, bark, seeds, size and age of tree, shape, etc. would be
helpful.
