I am not sure about the invalidity of "sinosyriacus" from the gardening point of
view, though it may well be in the botanical sense. Hilliers of Winchester's
famous guide lists a few varieties of H. sinosyriacus(L.H. Bailey) including
"Ruby Glow" which I once grew in the English Midlands, where it was perfectly
hardy but the climate was not sunny enough for it to produce much flower.
The flowers are described as larger but I found that they remained conical in
shape rather than opening fully.
