Jill's plant

Well, whatever you need, I will comply of course. I think that my LAST last name might be more appropriate, LOL! So maybe Hudsonii or something? The two that I have flower regularly but no seed unfortunately. I should put them in the same room so maybe they will pollinate? Anyway do you need a picture or an actual flower?

All the best,
Jill B. Hudson

Dear Jill: Unfortunately we have had quite a few thing disappear so I suspect night watchmen or even greenhouse staff. Unfortunately there is a large staff and inner doors are not locked.

It is nice that you did not get rid of the plant. I am planning to publish it as A. jillbelliae but is that name still appropriate?  I was not thinking that the darn plant would vanish or I would have made more vouchers. I am certain that we have one specimen mounted but I prefer that there is one specimen in Europe and since this plant came from the West Indies there should perhaps be a specimen deposited in the herbarium in Puerto Rico. I will see if Monica Carlsen has dna material and if not we will need a small piece of leaf dried in silica gel or perhaps if you sent a fresh we could use if we need another whole leaf for a specimen. I will advise you what to do. Of course it would be nice to get a piece again to grow if you plant might produce a pup but for the present it is the molecular study that we are concerned with. We want to know where A. jillbelliae falls in relation to other members of the genus in the Caribbean. I will find the type specimen to see if I made more than one sheet and let you know. I can’t even find my type specimen at present but am certain I made one since I described a dried herbarium specimen. Curiously, Monica just found in the herbarium a collection (Croat 44447 that I made at the Las Cruces Botanical Garden which is surely the same species since it was labeled as Anthurium “caribbea”. Perhaps they still have it in cultivation there (though I collected in 1978!). I have attached images from Tropicos of that collection.

I am copying Monica who will advise you further about getting the material needed for our molecular study. Would your plant presently be in flower?  I have obviously seen the inflorescence but Picasa has only found the attached images of the plant we once had and it seems not to have an inflorescence. The voucher number was assigned only recently but since it was in the greenhouse for quite a while perhaps one of the volunteer photographers photographed it over the years too. I think I photographed it a home but wonder why Picasa, which indexes constantly, has not picked up more images.

Love,

Tom

I am the only one I know of, I have two LARGE ones. Can I send you some stem you can propagate? I can’t believe someone would steal it! That is so awful. I can try to get seeds and make more. Let me know what its best! Thanks Tom!!

Dear Jill:  I am glad that I found this message as I had forgotten that you changed names. Please can you tell me if you still have material of A. jillbelliae?  For some reason we cannot find the collection you sent me and suspect that someone stole it. We had intended to use it for our next big molecular round of studies because I think it is very interesting. Perhaps it is sect. Episiostenium. Anyway we need to find more material. Do you know of anyone who still has this species?

Hugs,

Tom

The IAS Newsletter, August edition is in the hands of our printers and should be in members’ mailboxes soon.  Articles include a Swedish Show & Plant Sale/Swap, Difficulties with transplanting a Philodendron Meconostigma, an announcement of the IAS September Show & Sale in Miami and vacancies in the Society’s Governing Board.
Membership in the IAS Governing Board involves a three-year term with a turnover of one third of the members annually.  Accordingly, there will be five vacancies.  In years past, our membership was small and enough people attended the annual banquet to achieve quorum.  As of today, we have 1,843 members from 51 nations across the globe.  Reaching a quorum at this year’s meeting will be impossible.  Consequently, we are initiating an email vote and are now seeking nominations.
An email has been sent to all members.  Members will also find instructions on submitting nominations for someone else or for oneself in this issue of the newsletter.
Active members may access the newsletter online at the following link: https://www.aroid.org/society/newsindex.php
Non-members and inactive members will see a list of current and previous newsletters but will not have access to the newsletters themselves.
