In Portland, Oregon the Portland Community Gardens Program gets wood mulch
from out Urban Forestry Department and a leaf/manure mix from our Parks
operations. We get it delivered to most of the gardens. On occasion, we get
elephant manure from the zoo, if they have an oversupply. All this material
is generated either from the Parks grounds, street trees, zoo, or police
horse barn.
Our Parks Operations is trying to custom blend these ingredients for us,
which is very helpful.
The municipal yard debris is hauled to a private company that recycles it
and sells it. The street sweepers take leaves from the street and haul them
to a site where a private company composts them and sells them for a
finished product to the public at large.
