Re: City sponsored community gardens


Although our gardens are completely volunteer operated, they are supported
by Parks and Rec, or as they're now called here in Canada, Leisure Services.
They get to have another activity offered to the community under their
banner and they freely use our successful operation as a tourist attraction,
etc., but they don't need to provide extra staff to look after it. They did
the initial expensive testing of the soil, and ploughing, have helped with
various supplies , offered professional advice when needed, but maintain a
hands-off role. The garden committee of volunteers has a city liaison person
and easy access to the dept. head. For the past five years, this has worked
for us.
