garden design exercise needed

Hi.

I'm an Americorps volunteer, coordinating community gardens for a non-profit (www.foginfo.org) in Gainesville, FLorida.

I'm currently working with several neighborhoods, in the process of transforming vacant lots into gardens.

I'm looking for an exercise which can guide a group to create a garden design for a vacant lot.
Has anyone heard of this?  Or are there any suggestions on how to approach this?  Articles to read?  Websites to see?  I will be at the AGCA conference this month.

One of the groups has a permaculture interest as well, which makes it even more fun. (:
