Youth Gardening Program Coordinator
Wasatch Community Gardens is a community-based, nonprofit organization =
serving Salt Lake City's inner-city neighborhoods. In our Youth =
Gardening Program, inner-city young people plant, tend, harvest, sell =
and donate organic produce, learning responsibility, cooperation, and =
respect. We create partnerships with other organizations serving =
inner-city youth in order to integrate organic gardening into their =
education and social service programs. In our Community Gardening =
Program, adults and families grow fresh vegetables for themselves or =
others in need.
This position requires a highly organized and self-motivated individual =
with a sincere appreciation and respect for youth. This position gives a =
hard-working individual the opportunity to work in an innovative, =
community-based gardening program for inner-city, low-income and at-risk =
youth. Responsibilities:
Organize, administer and implement experiential education =
program for youth ages 5-18.
Lead daily groups of 5 to 12 youth participants in =
work/education projects, planting, tending and harvesting vegetables in =
two local community gardens.
Recruit participants for and participate in projects and =
Farmer's Market with teenage Youth-at-Market participants.
Maintain communication with collaborating agencies serving =
inner-city, low-income and at-risk youth.
Train and supervise assistant coordinator, teenage peer =
leaders and adult volunteers.
Maintain accurate program records for internal evaluation and =
grant-reporting purposes. =20
Assist in garden maintenance.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a social =
sciences, education, environmental studies or related field.
Highly organized, self-motivated and ability to perform =
multiple tasks independently.
Flexibility, energy and motivation; ability to adapt to =
changes in youth, gardens and seasons.
Ability to relate positively with youth from diverse =
backgrounds, ethnicities, and socioeconomic levels.
Job and volunteer experience that reflects ability to fulfill =
the above responsibilities.
Knowledge of gardening beneficial but not required. Must be =
willing/able to learn basic gardening skills quickly.
Knowledge of Word and Excel programs a plus.
Salary dependent on experience
Hours: 40 hours per week, flexible schedule, some evenings and =
Saturdays.
