If you happen to be in NYC's Hell's Kitchen this Saturday Afternoon, June
15th - we'd love to see ya.
Community Gardening, is 50% gardening and 100% political. The 50% is looking
pretty darn good this year, despite the drought - close to 150%; I guess
Mother Nature realized that we really needed it to be, especially after last
September ( and our volunteers have made us particularly proud with their
efforts.)

Community Gardeners Celebrate Summer in Hell's Kitchen
Join hundreds of gardeners from the 700+ New York City community gardens on
Saturday, June 15th to celebrate the 6th Annual Summer Solstice Celebration
at the Clinton Community Garden, located on West 48th Street between 9th and
10th Avenues in Manhattan.
The Summer Solstice Celebration will be held from 1-5:30 p.m. and will
include on-going activities such as summer plant giveaways, garden tours,
Parks SkateMobile, solstice magic and lots of fun activities for kids.
Keynote speaker Commissioner Adrian Benepe along with Manhattan Commissioner
Bill Castro, City Council Member Gale Brewer, City Council Member Christine
Quinn and Assembly Member DickGottfried will be among our guest on the
program. Representatives from NewYorkers For Parks, Trust for Public Land,
New York Restoration Project,Neighborhood Open Space Coalition, Council on
the Environment of New YorkCity, Partnership for Parks, Green Guerillas and
the New York City CommunityGarden Coalition will be on hand to help
celebrate summer and honor the
season's most popular plants.
Nate Harris, Outreach Coordinator, Partnership for Parks will conduct a
compost workshop along with professionals ready to answer questions about
urban gardening and design projects. GreenThumb will provide numerous
varieties of summer herbs and perennials. Visit these plant giveaway tables
and take home several new varieties to add to your community garden.
Fun kids' activities will include watermelon seed target shooting contest,
face painting, solstice herb amulet/crown making, sidewalk murals and more..
There will be plenty of food and fresh summertime produce made possible by
GreenThumb, city gardeners and the Council on the Environment of New York
City's Greenmarket program.
This years Solstice will feature the Gennaro's Wax Trio who will perform
throughout the day.
This event is co-sponsored by the Clinton Community Garden and
GreenThumb/NYC Parks and Recreation.
