cg summer program grades 1-5

I have a group of 10 first through fifth graders interested in plants and
gardening as well as a donated community garden plot and vegetable
seeds/seedlings. With the help of a few other volunteers, we are setting up an
after school/summer program for these kids. What we are trying to do is teach
these kids the basics of plants and gardening, the importance of fruits and
veggies in a healthy lifestyle, and instill an appreciation of nature.

Has anyone done anything similar? Just about ready to get started and am trying
to get a feel for the depth of knowledge this age group typically has with
plants. I don't want to bore them, but don't want to get too complicated
either! Any suggestions for activities aside from basic garden tasks? Any
help or suggestions would be very much appreciated.
