Regarding paving -
If you're using chips to make paths - it's also a good way to recycle
all that newspaper everyone has sitting around. Here in St. Louis - we
have lots of each available free. You can put a couple of inches of
newspaper under a good 6 inches of chips and not have to weed for a
while. 6 inches is not too much - you can put more down - they compact
quickly.
