Update On NYC's Lower East Side Community Gardening & AffordableHousing Issues - Bulldozer Season

This was forwarded to me by the folks from the CHARAS/El Bohio Arts and
Community Center. It is indicative of the changes and agitation that working
people have to go through in order to have both gardens and affordable
housing. As you can see, the folks who destroy gardens are not friends of
affordable housing.

Happy gardening,

> Rally & Protest against Serge Hoyta, luxury housing developer
> responsible for the eviction of tenants at 181 E. Houston St. & The
> Children's Magical Garden (Norfolk & Stanton Sts.)
> This:
> Friday Oct 20th, 6:00pm
> 181 E. Houston St. (corner of Orchard)
> directions: F train to 2nd ave., use 1st ave. exit
> Background
> Serge Hoyta, luxury housing developer, has signed contracts to purchase
> both the city owned 181 East Houston Street and the (unfortunately non
> greenthumb) Children's' Magical Garden.
> Immediately after signing the contract to purchase 181 E. Houston St.
> from HPD, HPD issued a vacate order to the tenants, citing the building
> was 'structurally unsound'. Seven families were thrown out of
> their homes. On September 26 in the rain, the families, without notice,
> were given one hour to take whatever belongings they could
> and leave their homes. Though HPD managed the building for over 2
> decades, providing little or no repair, they did not find the building
> uninhabitable until Serge signed a contract to purchase it. Serge has
> offered to relocate the tenants and has promised they can move back in
> once renovations are complete,?? though he is quick to offer to buy them
> out permanently.
> Serge also holds a contract to purchase & destroy the Magical Children's
> Garden at Norfolk & Stanton Sts. to develop luxury housing.
> The Children's Magical Garden is made up of three parcels of land, two
> city owned and 1 privately owned (by 88 holding company). The
> Children's Garden was created in 1985 with the owners permission, but
> after Serge signed the contract to purchase, he had a crew come in
> (without notice to children or parents) erect a fence, knock down the
> casista and chop down the 35 foot Christmas tree. Supporters of the
> Garden have asked TPL and NY Res. to intervene, but Serge wants $300,000
> to walk away. Hoyda, according to The New York Post, donated $4,000 to
> Giuliani's Senate Exploratory Committee last year.
> Please come join us to demand that Serge Hoyta return 181 East Houston
> St. and the Children's Magical Garden to the tenants and children of our
> community.
> The Rally will end with a march past the Children's Magical Garden to
> the Lillian Wald Houses.
> *This Rally is organized by: Lower East Side Tenant's Union, Good Old
> Lower East Side, 181 East Houston Tenant's Association, Met Council on
> Housing, More Gardens! Coalition and endorsed by: State Senator Martin
> Connor, State Senator Thomas Duane & City Council member Kathryn Freed.
