The Des Moines Community Garden Program has an AmeriCorps Community
Gardening position open.  We are looking for someone who can mobilize
community members to participate in community gardening projects, organize
community beautification efforts through the Botanical Center, enjoys and
understands the benefits of gardening and likes to work with people of all
ages and ethnicities.

A background in horticulture is not required, but these skills are  a bonus.
The ideal candidate would  have  ties to Des Moines' inner-city community
and is interested in bettering the community through gardening.  Ablity to
speak a second language and/or able to work with immigrant groups such as
Sudanese, Vietnamese, and Latinos is a plus.  We are an affirmative

The position is fulltime at $5.15 hourly with an educational award of $4,725
upon successful completion of 1700 hours within the first year of service
for college, student loan, or trade schools.  High school graduation or GED
or will obtain a high school diploma or GED within the first year of service
as an AmeriCorps member.  Must be at least 17 years of age.  Must have
reliable means of transportation to work site.  Hours:  Flexible between
8AM - 5PM, Monday-Friday including some evenings and weekends as assigned.
Employment duration - can start immediately or up until begining of January
and will be done at the completion of 1700 hours.

The Des Moines Community Gardening Coalition, a program of the Des Moines
Parks and Recreation Department, recruits, instructs and supports group
leaders in organzing and maintaining productive community gardens.  We work
with area agencies to supply the resources each garden needs.  Currently
there are over 30 community gardens in the City of Des Moines in schools,
shelters, low-income housing providers, and neighborhood associations who
grow flowers and vegetables.
