Dear ACGA Friends:
You may remember my message to you about Engine 54, Ladder 4, 9th Battalion
on West 48th Street in Manhattan, the firehouse closest to the Clinton
Community Garden in NYC. How could we ever have imagined that 3 days after
the successful Parks 2001 Rally at Union Square that this park would soon
become a memorial and candle vigil site for thousands of victims of the
tragic World Trade Center attack?
As always, we at Clinton Community Garden are ready and willing to use our
green sanctuary to serve the community. A concert that was previously
scheduled on Sept. 22 has been turned into a Benefit Concert for the
victims' families of our 3 Hell's Kitchen fire stations. In our 3 stations
alone, 57 firefighters who were among the first to respond, are missing.
These Hell's Kitchen Firehouses are:
Rescue 1 on West 43rd Street,
Engine 54, Ladder 4, 9th Battalion on West 48th Street and
Ladder 21, 7th Battalion on West 38th Street
Since the tragedy, when folks have asked me to whom contributions should be
sent, I have forwarded them the American Red Cross only. Things have come
together very quickly since then ( including the donated services of ONE4, a
local musical group) and as you reading this, note this evening, the posters
for this event will be going up in the store windows and lamp posts of our
neighborhood.
