Painted fern-where does it come from?

I just picked up this Athyrium niopnicum 'Picta' on the way home from work-i
love the colours there(pink/purple with light and dark green.)
Where does this fern originate? Obviously the suffix 'Picta' denotes its a
culitvar but it has the species niponicum, does this mean it comes from Japan
originally?
