From the book's summary I gather it is red in spring. Frequently young fern
leaves in sunny regions are red.

I grew up in Oklahoma, was interestd in ferns, and never heard of red ones. I
wonder if "red" fern refers to the color of the fronds after they have gone
dormant, rather than when they are active.
