Re: AFS Forum

Hi Anthony,

I'm the "list-dad" of ferns@hort.net...and I can give you some brief history
of the list-server. Indeed this has been around for many, many years
first as pteridonet then as fernet and most recently as ferns. The archives
of pteridonet were dutifully transferred to fernet, and fernet archives were
transferred to ferns.

However, ferns is not being served by a faculty member from a university
website, and so while hort.net has received the pteridonet and fernet
archives, those messages have NOT been put on-line in the nice way that
the archives since the last transfer are automatically threaded.

So we have not been hacked (as far as I know), we have a very nice
threaded archive since 2002, and I'm guessing that Christopher (who does
all of the services for us for free!) can provide you with the unthreaded
archives of both fernet and pteridonet. If not, then I **may** be able to do
that. I'd have to dig through some old back up versions of fernet.

Frankly, though, I'm not sure what value the archives would have. I have
had one serious inquiry about access to them in all these years. Would
you be my second?

Hello All

I've just been looking at the AFS web site. I noticed that there's a
message on their forum page to the effect that the forum had been hacked and
all the messages lost. It looks recent but there's no further information. I
wondered whether anyone knew the background. As webmaster of the BPS web
site, I take more than a passing interest in these things!

Regards

Anthony
