I have, for obvious reasons, never tried for a bird-friendly habitat. On the other hand, I have tried to enable others in town to have lots of birds by nature of the fact that I try to keep the town's cats fed and neutered. :-)

We normally have quite a few birds here - all types including woodpeckers.
When we moved in, I concentrated on building bird-friendly habitat, and they
have taken advantage of it. I have so many nests and fledglings around here
that it's a joy to walk around and listen.
The species list has changed over the years as the surrounding area has
built up. For example, no more Chuck-will's-widows around, or Meadowlarks,
but Indigo Buntings, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, lots of warblers and others
visit. The Red-Headed Woodpecker, a childhood favorite, has moved in, where
before it stayed in the deep woods. The usuals are still here- Downies and
Red-bellies mostly. The Pileated has always been infrequent, and I haven't
seen a Hairy in several years.

I agree with you, Daryl, that Pileated Woodpeckers are cool beyond cool. Have you all had a lot of woodpeckers of all sorts this year?--------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE GARDENCHAT
