I agree with you, Daryl, that Pileated Woodpeckers are cool beyond cool. Have you all had a lot of woodpeckers of all sorts this year? We have more than I've ever before seen. In fact this year we seem to have more of every sort of birds this year. Today I took a ride through the Wolf River Nature Conversancy that abuts my small town. There beside the soy bean fields were blue birds, indigo buntings, finches and cardinals. What a beautiful (and colorful) site they were.

I can't imagine what it's like to see one. Not only the shivers that go down
my spine that such a rare bird, thought lost, is found, but also the sheer
size of the thing. The locals call the Pileated Woodpecker the "Lord God
Bird" (as in "Lord God, What's that?") but the Ivory-Billed is even bigger.
We occasionally have a Pileated here. They're enormous, and pull chunks of
bark off of dead pines that can knock you out. Awesome indeed!
