I hadn't heard that, but my mother used to give her chickens some kind of ground up oyster shells.

I brushed the dogs, and dispersed the clumps about the yard in tow
of Ariana "The Canine-Avian Diplomat".

Somewhere once I read that if you put out chicken egg shell nesting
birds will consume the shell bits to replenish calcium reserves to
help with the production of more eggs.  Has anyone else ever heard that?

I love watching bird families. We usually have robin, finch, dove and
cardinal families. This year a new robin couple is trying to build a nest
in one of the white pines in the back yard. I noticed it while at the
kitchen sink. I saw something moving amongst the needles, but the color
seemed odd. Bill came to take a look and he thought the same thing. The
next day when there was no movement in the tree, I went to take a peek.
She's definitely a new mother. It didn't have the look or feel of an
established nest maker, and the odd color was her trying to weave in some
toilet paper she'd found! LOL!!! Well, there will be clean up after the
youngsters! It is also pretty low in the pine, so I worry the neighbor's
cats (often loose and on the prowl) might be a problem. It looked like she
was still working on nesting materials as I kept seeing her make trips with
odd scraps in her beak.

I needed that.

I'd been watching Doves since March nesting in a hanging basket outside the
porch. One of the eggs hatched and for about three days we could see the
chick being fed and happily raised and all, but after some swirly/twirly
thing went through our yard last week, the poor little thing was gone.

It took this tree with it as well:

The swirly/twirly went on to rip off the sheet metal of a structure 1/4 a
mile up the road, and then flatten a huge stand of trees. This was at
1:30am, but luckily, no people were hurt!

The Dove parents are still around... I hope they try again!
