RE: pine trees
Yeah, I have looked at bamboo now and again for my teahouse garden.
Descriptions for the clumping ones all seem to say they won't live in
high heat. I'm afraid to plant anything that needs containment. I
thought about putting them in pots, but then there's the watering
problem. So I plant nandina instead, but the gophers have taken out a
lot of my dwarf nandina, and the taller ones look pretty scraggly now,
although I'm not sure why...maybe I'll try cutting back a few canes and
see if they bush out.

There's a Fargesia rufa & some other clumping bamboo that should be
hardy
here. Of course the ones I long for need restraint or are tender here.
