Deet, since it's a personal repellent, is not likely to be included in an aerial spray. Most of the sprays are synthetic pyrethrins. DEET does not kill mosquitoes. It does not prevent reproduction.
Much as I hate government involvement in my personal air space, the EPA is now regulating the use of such sprays, and regulations are pretty tight, especially if you have any wetlands nearby that may have protected species. Heck, even the normal spray regs have gotten tight about aquatic inverts.
I wouldn't pitch the veggies.I Would make sure they post a label and/or the name of the pesticide or an information source either on a sign, in the town hall or on a website. Failure to do so, even by a government entity, is likely forbidden. I know that commercial entities have to post and have to post re-entry times. That some old woman (forgive me, but that's likely in my town) did not know what was sprayed, is not beyond reason.

Well my two main issues are: deet... I am sure it was included in this spray. My allergy scratch test to determine the most crucial things to avoid asthmaattacks - this was number one on the list. Veggie gardens- is this chemical they are using a reason to pitch the veggies still out there? Neither question could be answered by 'the town'. This is regular occurance here. I haven't died yet from it, but then our air quality is so bad much of the summer, a little extra crap mixed in probably doesn't make a difference. I do agree with your position however- if you don't want to be bitten by a mosquito, then stay inside or wear mosquito repellent. I am not goingto breathe whatever it was....There should be a law against doing this kindathing!..especially without warning.
