I think sometimes it depends on what they've been through (which you'll never know) with the human species. Braveheart came to me with Mick. Mick was about a year and came into the house within a couple of days. Braveheart who seemed older, maybe 2 or 3 yrs, wouldn't let me touch him for months. Then one day, after watching the other cats do it without coming to great harm, he jumped up on my stomach and settled in. Mick looked like he may have been a pet. Braveheart was never anyone's pet. I'd guess feral or barn cat. I often wonder how the two met up before showing up at my door.

Ya know..sometimes it is just the cat's basic personality to not trusthumans. We've had barn kittens, born wild by some stray cat. Some of themwould come to us, the others would run and hide and not come out until we left. Just like people - they have their own personalities. But I would trap them and take them to the vet/humane society because you don't want abunch of wild cats running around and that's what will happen. Good luck toyou...and I admire your big heart. I think some of these cats are relatives of E.T. and Diesel. E.T. had obviously had human contact before he was dumped. A few kind words andhe melted and started following me around the garden like a puppy. Wish they could get through to them. I guess I'll have to borrow a cat trap to get them in to the Feral Cat program of our local humane society. If they're 6 months old or younger, you might be able to tamethem, but if they're older - probably not. We have a grown cat that hangs around our place. He/She is solid white. Scares the tar outta me when I'm outside in the dark gathering eggs or feeding. One time Ithought it was an owl up on a fence hiding around the shrubs...when I got closer it jumped down and ran over me trying to get away. Can't even get close to the silly thing. But it is smart enough to know where the foodcan be found, and smart enough to stay away from my big 'critter-chasing" dog. We have mice all over the place out here. They are attracted to the bowls of feed for the livestock. And because of that, we have lots of hawks and owls that hang out waiting for a nice meal. The cat is obviously interested in the morsels too.--------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE GARDENCHAT-- Jesse R.
