Interesting, Cathy. It never occurred to me to contact Apple. But that's the message I kept getting, too, "authentication failed."
Learned when I got to work today that Symantec had just issued a patch for a virus released on Feb 20. I suspect Earthlink was having a bit of virus trouble.

I had exactly the same problem all yesterday, Kept getting the message "authentication failed" when I tried to connect. Spent an inordinate amount of time trying to figure out what was going on (twice contacting earthlink and between those, apple). Apple assured me, through demonstrating a successful connect to them, that nothing was wrong with my software or modem. Earthlink steadfastly denied they had a problem both times, but I am on again today. Go figure!

I had trouble last evening fetching e-mails. For some reason, I couldn't get into the POP at Earthlink. Seems to be working all right this AM.
