Re: planning trip to Calif

Well actually orphaned isn't as funny as it sounds. Without looking at a map you have that small stand of Redwoods near Big Sur right next to San Simeon...Hearst Castle...then you have to travel at least 100 miles or so until Santa Cruz to find more redwoods. Then they stop again until you get north of San Francisco to where I live and from there they extend all the way to the Oregon border. Why that stand at Big Sur still survives is beyond me. Cal. before it was Cal. was filled with Redwoods. Now they are just along the coast. That is Sequoia Sempervirens... I believe. Now if you want to see some really fat but not so tall trees you go for the Sequoia Gigantias near Yosemite. Them's some big trees.

You are funny- Big Sur as an "orphaned" stand of Redwoods!

Oh- but if they are driving sound along the coast, they could go into Heast Castle- It was eons ago that I went there, but at that time they had wonderful gardens around it. (the all the swimming pools there are really cool too!)

Well Tricia where I live is called the Redwood Empire because they basically start here except one little orphaned little stand near Big Sur. So, let me know what you can do and I'll help guide you.

David,
My sister lives around Santa Monica. I want to spend some time around San Francisco and if time permits I would love to see the Redwood Forest.
I want to see and do it all but I know that isn't possible. I will look up the Golden Gate park and Fioli.
thank you,
Tricia

Hi Tricia

Uh, where's Monticito? Is that a part of Sacramento? Anyway, if you come west from Sac. then I can suggest a really great Hibiscus nursery... : ). Just kidding. Theresa may know of more areas in the Sac. area however if you are coming down more toward the Bay Area then I can give you some really nice gardens. Golden Gate Park has a few and then there is Filoli which is down the penninsula a little bit. That is really a treat.

If you do come this way let me know and if you'd like to see the hibs you are welcome anytime.

I am working on planning a trip to Calif in April for 10 days. We will fly in and out of Sacramento. We will rent a card so that we can drive to my sisters place in Monticito.
I was hoping some of you could recommend some great gardening things to see and do while we are there.
This is a trip for our 20th anniversary.
Thank you in advance for any help!
Tricia
