Dirr is a real curmudgeon. You should read what he says about Chlerodendrum trichotinum. I don't ever pay a lot of attention to his personal opinions, having learned we share very few of them. <LOL>

Well, who cares if Dirr doesn't like it? I have 3 Viburnum in the back that
I thought were macrocephalums when I purchased them about 4 years ago, for
$1.50 each at the end of the season at Wal-Mart. Turns out they are not a
snowball, but the more beautiful (I think) form that looks almost like a
dogwood. Tiered branches, with sort of lace cap blooms. Can't recall the
name off hand, but I was thrilled when I realized what they were last year.
It was the first time they had really put on a show. I've been watering
them better lately so they'll put on an even better show this year.

Is the > carlcephalum a hybrid of the macro? ---------- Well, several of them are called snowballs but the one I think of as that is V. opulus 'Sterile'...had one once and was very fond of it. V. carlcephalum is a hybrid of V. carlesii and V. macrocephalum. Where V. burkwoodii is V. carlesii x V. utile, so they are related. There are several named forms of V. burkwoodii out there but I've not run across Dirr is not fond of V. carlcephalum but I love mine, great form or no; it fills the garden with a honey scent every spring.
