I was not quite 5 years old when I started kindergarden. At that time, all Los Angeles city schools had garden plots, one plot for each class. Working in the garden plot was very much part of the daily curriculum. We turned the soil, formed hills and rows, planted seeds [mostly vegetables], pulled weeds, irrigated, harvested, and divvied up the harvest.
