It wouldn't be a good time here as the ground is frozen. But generally, hosta can be dug just about anytime you can dig, spring or fall - even summer. They are very forgiving. My S&S was declining so I dug it last fall and potted the divisions, and then overwintered them in the pots under leaves. Every one of them died. This was strange to me because I have always done this and all my other hosta varieties have responded well. S&S is the only one that didn't make it. So when I divided another big-leaf hosta, Frances Williams, last fall, I replanted some just in case and potted some, not wanting to risk losing all of it.

Is this the best time to dig and separate hostas?I promised to share a start of Sum and Substance. She gave me my first start and hers has died out.Tricia----- Original Message ----- From: "Kitty" <kmrsy@comcast.net>To: <gardenchat@hort.net> Sent: Saturday, February 23, 2008 1:52 PM Subject: Re: [CHAT] new coverI finally finished digging out the Hosta bed I planted 12 yrs ago that needed rejuvenating. I replanted a few divisions but potted most for sale. So I knew I needed some new varieties. Hostas actually tend to multiply more if you keep dividing them.HThe items I'm hoping will be good multipliers are Hosta Hanky Panky Hosta Cherry Berry Hosta Abiqua Moonbeam Hosta Liberty Siberian Iris Silver Edge Siberian Iris Butter & Sugar Siberian Iris Eric the Red Digitalis obscura Hemerocallis Chorus Line Salvia Blue Flame Antirrhinum Dulcinea's Heart Euphorbia Tasmanian Tiger These next ones I ordered because I like them. Pelargonium endlicherianum Mirabilis multiflorus Leptinella Platt's Black Euphorbia x martinii Tiny Tim Kitty neIN, Zone 5----- Original Message ----- From: "Patricia" <pdickson@sbcglobal.net>To: <gardenchat@hort.net> Sent: Saturday, February 23, 2008 2:37 PM Subject: Re: [CHAT] new coverI haven't ordered anything yet but Kitty I would love to know what you order thinking it will multiply?Tricia----- Original Message ----- From: "Kitty" <kmrsy@comcast.net>To: <gardenchat@hort.net> Sent: Saturday, February 23, 2008 1:30 PM Subject: Re: [CHAT] new coverIf they send me one it will be long after the rush; if they have some leftover. As Gene will attest, catalogs are expensive and if people don't place orders, they simply have to get deleted from the list. I do place orders, but they are for the display gardens and so the catalog would go to the CES office. Ricky gives me some of them, but I can't get there very often.I used to order a lot for myself from all sorts of places, but in recent years I just haven't had any money to do so, so I am falling off lists. However, I can always find the plants online and download order forms from websites .I did place orders this year for me w Homestead, Bluestone, and HCG. I need to start growing new material to be able to divide plants in the future for my annual plant sale. I tend to look at plants now, not just for their aesthetic value, but for their tendency to multiply. If I can divide a plant in a couple of years and sell off 3/4 of it, the plant pays for itself. It might be fun to air our lists. What are you ordering this year?
