Bummer! Painting your head is a great idea! Hmmm....they didn't tell me not to garden or eat fresh produce when I was having chemo but it makes sense. I didn't want the produce anyway -- too hard to digest. You are right to be as creative and "out there" with your own treatment and recovery as you can possibly think of. I think every single little choice you actively make during this time is strengthening and uplifting.

What gets me is that this is the third spring in a row that I won't be able to work in the garden as I want. When your white count is down, they don't want you in the soil or fooling with plants, such as roses, because of the fungi, etc. AND, I am restricted from fresh fruits and veggies for the same reasons. I will STARVE. So, I am planning to get my head painted with flowers. There are lots of us, survivors that is, out there. Remember Darwin's words: "It's not the strongest or the most intelligent who survive. It's the most adaptable." That's certainly not averbatim quote, but that's the jist of it. My theory of survival has alwaysbeen that I drive on the highway. zem----- Original Message ----- From: "Pam Evans" <gardenqueen@gmail.com>To: <gardenchat@hort.net> Sent: Monday, February 01, 2010 5:49 PM Subject: Re: [CHAT] Way OT /CancerAmen to that. I have never been veryactive on this list but withdrew myself in spirit summer 2008 when I wasbeing treated for breast cancer. Actually I enjoyed reading the emails eachday and hearing about your daily ups and downs, but just didn't have theenergy to contribute. Bonnie -- my thoughts are with you! This is Not Fun, but better than the alternative! Be sure to ask about anti-nausea drugs; they got me thru in great shape with my own regimen of chemo and radiation. Do whatever you have to to keep your spirits up -- I believe it makes an enormous difference during and after. I am feeling great now, have hair back etc etc, but the lingering fear I suppose will always be in the background. Garden-wise not a whole lot to report though enjoyed each small task I did this past summer. Here in Calif we are all focused on rain amounts, have had some big storms as you know, They are saying El Nino (= more rain) is in effect. Here at my place have had average so far after 3 low years; Sierra snow pack is above average for the first time in several years. Tho have had a little snow at my altitude, thank goodness we're not dealing with the ice and snow and very cold temps that some of you are. --Barb Tandy, Grass Valley CA----- Original Message ----- From: "Gene Bush" <genebush@netsurfusa.net>To: <gardenchat@hort.net> Sent: Monday, February 01, 2010 12:01 PM Subject: RE: [CHAT] Way OT /Cancer Bonnie,I went through the cancer thing winter of 08. Thanks to all on thislist and many others who send prayers and good vibs my way all is well. There was a tumor on the side of my neck and surgery could not remove it for it sat on the nerves that control the left side of my face and head. So, radiation and chemo both. Began in November and lasted until mid-February. Will not go into all the details here, but if you want to call or email in private would be glad to chat about the experience. Every experience is different, but no nausea for me...ate everything but the kitchen table legs. Just weak... very weak toward the last of treatments and after for about 6 months. Don't anyone talk you out of your feelings... it is scary. Gene E.
