Re: Computer worm brewing

Kitty,

Grisoft (AVG) offers a free version for home users. It's compatible with Windows 98. I used it on my Dad's computer when Norton wouldn't work. http://www.grisoft.com/doc/289/lng/us/tpl/tpl01#Compatibility

You can download it from http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 , then disconnect your computer from the internet. Then uninstall Norton (do that carefully, since you have to uninstall some components before others. ) reboot, and install the AVG.
I found that AVG was compatible with the free version of Zone Alarm, too, so if you want a software firewall, I'd give that a try, too, but check in case they've changed the program to only comply with 98SE as the Pro version has.

I liked AVG so much better than Norton that I've installed the paid versions on all of our computers.
wrt to Zone Alarm Pro, I'm happy with the version that has fewer bells and whistles. I've heard that some folks have had trouble with their spyware-control version.

It's acompound problem. I had Norton from the beginning. 2yrs ago when I renewed online it asked if I wanted to upgrade for an adtl $10 to a version that also supplied spyware protection. Sounded good. But it was my silly assumption that they would only offer an upgrade that my stem could use. Not quite. It was always a trick making it work. Then the next year and I made a straightforward renewal, but by then they'd added 'improvements' and with the renewal came an upgrade that was far beyond what my Win98 could handle. Now it just keeps trying to get updates, slowing down my computer. It always fails.

I've been through the customer sevice hoops with them before. No real people. Frankly I just don't care anymore.
