Well Pam,
            After so many years without rainfall, I bet your subsurface
moisture is getting replenished.
            Here at my house we had 90.5" of snow between December 2008 and
May 2009. So far this winter...September 2009 to today we have had 71" of
the white stuff. rainfall this year was 13.5" with no real deluges like many
of the garden folks had.
